Carterton will be looking to assume the role of giant-killer when they play Martinborough in a Wairarapa regional one tennis match at Carterton tomorrow.
As competition leaders, Martinborough will be strongly favoured to continue on their winning way, especially after their 7-2 demolition of second-placed Opaki last weekend, but Carterton shouldn't be lacking anything on the score of confidence either.
The southerners go into this game on the back of a 9-0 whipping of Masterton and while Martinborough will be an entirely different proposition Carterton will be hoping the experience of players like Judy Murrell, Cathy Rolls and Liam McMenamin, plus the home advantage, will at least make them competitive.
Gladstone and Opaki should also have an interesting duel at Gladstone with the top singles in both the men's and women's sections likely to play a key part in the end result.
The only loss Opaki's Russell Broughton has suffered in singles play this season has been to his Gladstone counterpart Baden Stevenson and he will be keen to set the record straight on this occasion. Stevenson does have youth and fitness in his corner though and that could again tip the scales his way.
The singles clash between Katie Wyeth (Opaki) and Emma Stevenson (Gladstone) in the women's section should be an absolute battle royal with a three-setter almost assured.
Masterton and Pirinoa will meet at Masterton in the third of the regional one fixtures with both struggling to get something positive out of a season which has hardly been memorable for either of them. At full strength Pirinoa would win but they've seldom been that way in 2007-08.
