Defending champions Martinborough chalked up their first win in this season's Wairarapa regional one tennis competition when they walloped previously unbeaten Masterton 7-2 at Martinborough last weekend.
It was an impressive effort from a Martinborough side close to full strength for the first time this season and it's difficult to imagine them not repeating the effort against Carterton at Martinborough tomorrow.
The full scoreboard from their victory over Masterton has only just come to hand and it verifies Martinborough's superiority.
In the men's singles the only loss came at the top of the order where Marco de Groot was beaten by the very much in-form Luke Atkinson in three sets, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.
In other games there Steve Chapman accounted for Geoff Janse 7-5, 6-3, Matt Nicholson beat Matt Bunny 6-3, 6-2 and Dan Nicholson beat Alex Silverwood 6-1, 6-3.
The women's singles saw Martinborough win two from two. Carla Didsbury did lose the first set to Ashleigh Gane 7-5 but recovered to take the next two easily at 6-0, 6-1 and Libby Paterson was her usual consistent self in beating young Sade Atkinson 6-1, 6-2.
In the doubles it was one-all in the men's section.
Chapman and de Groot lost 5-7, 0-6 to Atkinson and Janse and the Nicholson brothers beat Bunny and Silverwood 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.
And Martinborough won the women's doubles, Didsbury and Paterson beating Gane and Atkinson 6-3, 6-4.
Carterton, which had the bye last weekend, is currently sitting at the bottom of the points table and while the likes of Matt Spooner, Kelby Courtney and Cathy Rolls have been in good enough touch it's hard to see them troubling a Martinborough line-up which has greater depth in all areas.
Masterton, for their part, will be wanting to bounce back to winning form when they play Opaki at Masterton.
This should be an interesting battle for Opaki also has something to prove, having been on the end of a 5-4 beating by Gladstone last weekend.
Providing both teams are at full strength the odds would favour a narrow win to Opaki as while the men's singles and doubles should be evenly contested Opaki, with Katie Wyeth at the helm, should have the edge amongst the women.
