Civil Defence authorities in Marlborough will decide later today whether to scale down the firefighting effort around Blenheim.
Firefighters believe they have successfully brought under control the fires on the Wither Hills near Blenheim and the fire burning inland of Ward.
More than 100 firefighters including volunteers from Wainuiomata, Nelson and the West Coast have been involved in the emergency effort.
The Wither Hills fire has scorched 6,500 hectares of scrub and farmland.
The Ward fire has covered around 540 hectares of mostly very steep terrain.
Authorities are now assessing the damage caused by the fires.
