Westhaven Marina's green credentials have again been confirmed after they were awarded the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) Blue Flag for the sixth consecutive year.
The Blue Flag programme, which operates in 41 countries and 3450 beaches and marinas, encourages marinas and boat owners to take an active role in keeping the marine environment clean.
According to Westhaven manager Russell Mathieson, the programme recognises and rewards exceptional environmental management.
He says it is predominantly a Northern Hemisphere institution and is likely to impress visiting boaties from that part of the world during the Rugby World Cup later this year.
As part of their commitment to the programme, Westhaven invites local schools and youth organisations to take part in environmental initiatives at the marina.
"The marina website also promotes environmental tips and safe marina practices," he says.
Two other Auckland organisations have also received Blue Flags.
For the Okahu Bay Landing it was a continuation of their previous success. In 2009 they became the world's first boat haulout and maintenance yard to become Blue Flag compliant.
The Spirit of Adventure Trust also celebrated receiving their first Blue Flag award.
