A "youth gang" of the feathered variety has been wreaking havoc in Haast - damaging property and garden equipment and even the local police vehicle.
Sole-charge Haast policeman, constable Paul Gurney, said in his report to the South Westland newsletter Community Contact, the 'gang' - which had grown to six at last check - had taken up residence in the Haast township over the past few months.
"Damage has occurred to vehicles and property - particularly garden equipment and roof lines - even the police 4x4 was attacked recently, resulting in an expensive trip to the electrician," Mr Gurney said.
"Police surveillance has ascertained the gang name to be nestor notabilis - (also known as) kea."
After discussions with the Department of Conservation, he established that the troublemakers would be leaving Haast shortly, under their own steam.
