A rift has emerged between senior managers at Maori Television after the decision to continue Ani Waaka's role as the channel's acting chief executive.
It is understood security staff escorted the station's Maori language general manager, Joseph Te Rito, from its Newmarket offices on Monday after he reacted angrily to news Ms Waaka was staying on as the station's head.
A source at Maori Television said Mr Te Rito, a former head of Maori Studies at the Eastern Institute of Technology, was furious at not being told he had missed out on the chief executive's job.
"He found out the same time that staff did, when Ani was appointed," the source said.
The Herald understands there has been growing tension between factions in the station's management over the channel's focus.
Some want greater focus on the promotion of Maori language against moves to broaden the channel's commercial appeal.
Maori Television runs a mix of Maori, English and bilingual programmes.
Ms Waaka became acting chief executive when Derek Fox resigned in August after a claim of sexual harassment from a woman, named in Parliament as Maori Television board member Joanna Paul.
Maori Television chairman Wayne Walden said this week the board had received about 40 applications or expressions of interest for the position. But most of these came from people who did not have the skills or experience sought.
Mr Walden said Ani Waaka, formerly deputy chairwoman of the Maori Television Board, would continue in the role.
"I am delighted that Ani is available to remain as chief executive for the longer term, and I know that she has the full support of the board directors, senior managers and our stakeholder partners."
Ms Waaka did not return calls yesterday.
