Manukau residents protest against liquor store

Manukau residents took to the streets today to protest against the number of liquor stores in their area.

The opening of Finlayson Liquor in Clendon spurred locals into action, who say the abundance of bottle shops only fuels crime.

Marama Katipa told TV3 that too many young people were "getting killed".

About 70 people, young and old, turned up to voice opposition over the decision which saw a fruit and vegetable shop converted to a bottle shop.

They are being backed by Manurewa councillor Colleen Brown.

"I'd like to see the select committee really get its head around the recommendations from the Law Commission," she says.

Clendon community support group chair Waina Emery called for a law change which would allow locals to have a say in licensing decisions.

But Finlayson Liquor spokesperson Daljit Singh said opposers should have objected when the store advertised its application for a licence in the newspaper.
