KEY POINTS:
Manukau Mayor Len Brown has been granted at least six months leave of absence by his local body to recover from a serious heart attack.
Mr Brown, who collapsed at a function in south Auckland on May 31, underwent bypass surgery at Auckland Hospital three days later.
However, complications later arose and he required further surgery last week.
The 51-year-old was taken off the critical list on Wednesday and his condition was today described as stable.
Mr Brown applied for two months leave to recuperate but acting Mayor Gary Troup said he had been given an extended break by the Manukau City Council.
"None of us know when Len will be able to resume his mayoral duties. That depends on his progress and medical advice," he said.
There is no legislation governing the timeframe of a leave of absence, councils determine the period.
