A 45m graffiti mural celebrating some of Counties-Manukau's most famous residents was unveiled last night in Manukau City before some of its featured stars.
The artwork, called The Lion Foundation Hall of Champions, was painted by graffiti artists Otis Frizzell and Daniel Tippett.
The mural features sporting, entertainment, business and community champions from the area.
Included is Everest conqueror Sir Edmund Hillary, the late Prime Minister David Lange, champion board sailor Barbara Kendall, rugby star Jonah Lomu, rally legend Possum Bourne, who died in 2003, hip-hop pioneer Phil Fuemana who died last year, Fisher & Paykel co-founder Sir Woolf Fisher and Olympic champions John Walker and Yvette Corlett.
The unveiling was attended by Sir Edmund, John Walker, Possum Bourne's widow Peggy and members of the Fuemana family.
The mural, commissioned by the Lion Foundation and TelstraClear, took two weeks to paint on to the side of the TelstraClear Pacific building on Great South Rd. The artists worked from 10am to midnight most days.
Designs by artists Kevin Dong, Lorraine Henderson, Jayson Mokotupu, Jason Pocklington and Isabella Shin were also chosen to be incorporated into the mural.
