KEY POINTS:
Manukau City councillor and former Social Credit Party leader Neil Morrison died yesterday morning of a suspected stroke. He was 69. Mr Morrison had represented the Pakuranga ward since 1989 and chaired Manukau's economic development committee.
The former MP for Pakuranga, who won the seat by 419 votes from two-term National MP Pat Hunt in 1984 before losing it to Maurice Williamson three years later, had been campaigning for another term in council. Long-time friend Sir Barry Curtis said he would be "sadly missed and fondly remembered".
Mr Morrison is survived by his wife, Gabrielle, two children and three grandchildren. His funeral will be held at the Telstra Clear Events Centre in Manukau on Saturday morning at 10.30.
