Manukau residents may soon see an increase in rates, following a proposal by their city council.
A 3.9 per cent rates increase has been put forward by Manukau City Council at a meeting discussing its 10-year plan.
An extra 1 per cent increase for 2009 to 2010 is needed to fund the levy for Auckland regional amenities.
Manukau Mayor Len Brown says he is aware of the need for "financial prudence and restraint" during the economic situation.
However, the proposed increase aims to achieve a balance between what is affordable for both the council and the Manukau City community, he said.
"As a council, we are sending a strong and clear message to our businesses and community that we are hugely confident in our city.
"In my view, we want to achieve a good balance - minimising the impact on ratepayers and maximising the opportunities to invest in our community in difficult times."
A number of projects in the council's 10-year plan have already been cut, while others have been deferred because of financial issues.
Mr Brown acknowledged the council did not want to make any rash
financial moves, which may provide problems for others in the future.
Up to $20 million will go towards the transport hub within the Manukau City business district, with $185 million for the Auckland-Manukau eastern transport initiative road
package.
The renewal of a swimming pool centre in Otara, the upgrade of netball courts in Manurewa, a new arts centre in Mangere and upgrading Papatoetoe streets have also been set into the council's budget plans.
The Auckland City Council has proposed a 2 per cent rates increase for its residents, North Shore proposes an increase of 5.9 per cent and Waitakere 3 per cent.
Manukau City Council's draft 10-year plan is set to be available next month. Residents can give feedback on www.tellusyourmanukau.govt.nz.
