A journal by New Zealand writer Katherine Mansfield failed to reach its reserve at auction today.
The journal was expected to sell for between $80,000 and $100,000 but only reached about $35,000 at Dunbar Sloane auction house in Wellington today, auction house spokesman Anthony Gallagher said.
However, since the auction finished a prospective buyer had expressed interest and the auction house was negotiating a possible sale.
