The man accused of murdering Palmerston North pre-schooler Kash McKinnon has appeared in court.
The 21-year-old was granted interim name suppression and remanded in custody.
He is due back in the Palmerston North District Court next Wednesday.
Police say the man contacted them last night and came in for questioning this morning.
He was then charged with the three-year-old's murder.
Paramedics found Kash with critical head injuries at a Hulme Street, Palmerston North, house on August 19 after a visitor called an ambulance.
She died in Palmerston North Hospital the next day.
Post mortem results returned last Friday revealed her injuries were non-accidental and a homicide inquiry was launched.
Kash and three other children, aged two, four and six, some of whom were her siblings, had been at the house in the care of a man, who was not her father.
