A man's body found today in vegetation near a Waikato railway line appears to have been there for some time, police said.
Police have launched an inquiry after the body was found on vacant land in Huntly early this afternoon as a result of information from a member of the public.
Detective Inspector Chris Page, of Waikato CIB, said the area was off Shaw St and near a railway line used for coal deliveries to the power station.
"Initial indications are that the body has been there for some time," he said.
"We have secured the scene and are beginning an intensive inquiry, including forensic analysis.
Mr Page said police were working as quickly as possible to identify the man.
He said the investigation was in its early stages and no further information was available.
