Mount Maunganui residents are being asked for information about the discovery of an elderly man's body in shallow waters at Pilot Bay.
The 81-year-old's body was found by a member of the public walking along the beach in the Salisbury Wharf area about 10.40am. A police officer pulled the man's body ashore and the area was cordoned off.
At this stage it is not believed that the death is suspicious, however a post mortem examination will be carried out as a matter of course, police said.
The man is believed to be a local.
His vehicle was located at Salisbury Wharf and police would like to hear from anyone who has recently been in that area or along that stretch of coastline, who may have information relevant to the man's death.
