Manawatu Gorge will partially reopen this week, a year after a large slip blocked the state highway 3 route.
One-way traffic from Woodville to Ashhurst will be allowed through between 8am and 6pm and two-way traffic, controlled by traffic lights, will be let through at night.
At all other times, people travelling from Ashhurst to Woodville would continue to use the alternative routes, NZTA Palmerston North state highways manager David McGonigal said.
The road was closed on August 18 last year because of a slip. It reopened for three days before another, massive slip closed it again.
A plan to open a temporary road was dropped early last month when the flooded river washed away material that would have supported it.
