A man armed with a pistol has been fought off with a walking stick after he attempted to enter a Coromandel Peninsula home on Sunday morning.
Detective Sergeant Martyn Hughes of the Thames CIB said police were called to an address on Paeroa-Kopu Rd near the intersection with the SH25A, the Kopu-Hikuai Rd after a man and a woman, were woken by knocking at their front door around 2.25am.
"The woman saw a male at the door armed with a shotgun and screamed, responding to his partner's scream the man saw a hand protruding through a gap in the door holding a pistol and he struck it with a walking stick, knocking it to the floor inside the house."
Mr Hughes said it appeared the male victim has then gone outside and confronted the man armed with the shotgun, during the struggle the shot gun has been discharged and the victim was struck on his shoulder by a third offender armed with an unknown object.
"Our enquiries into what exactly happened have been hampered to a degree by the reluctance of some witnesses to speak to us," said Mr Hughes.
