Police were called to Middlemore Hospital in Auckland after reports of a patient with a knife.
Inspector Cornelius Kluessien said the man has not been arrested.
He said the man was not threatening people with the knife but was "a bit stroppy".
Counties Manukau District Health Board spokeswoman Lauren Young said the man had a knife in his bag.
She said "no one has been holed up" and it was not a hostage situation.
"It is not an uncommon incident," Ms Young said.
