A man police claimed left a 150mm knife blade embedded in another man's face is to defend a charge of attempted murder.
Police alleged Vance Paraki Tuheke, 31, stabbed the other man in the face after a domestic row last month.
The knife entered the man's face just below the left eye, with the tip almost protruding from the right side of the face.
Surgeons removed the knife in a delicate operation and the 36-year-old man was expected to make a full recovery.
As Tuheke was brought into North Shore District Court today, he waved at a young child who called out to him from the public gallery.
The judge ordered the child to be removed from the court.
Tuheke was remanded in custody for a depositions hearing in October.
His lawyer, Geoff Anderson, said a bail application would be lodged.
