KEY POINTS:
A Wairarapa man who allegedly threatened a police officer with a chainsaw and threw a can of petrol at his patrol car has appeared in Palmerston North District Court today.
Daniel Lewis Mailman, 41, from Pahiatua, was charged with resisting arrest, possession of an offensive weapon and disqualified driving. Police are considering more charges.
Sergeant Steve Baddock of Pahiatua police told NZPA the lone officer was called to a domestic incident at a house at Mangamaire, 13km southwest of Pahiatua, about 8.30pm.
"When he arrived at the house a male approached him wielding a chainsaw.
"He was revving it up, threatening him (the officer) and telling him to leave the place."
Two boys, aged seven and 11, also threatened the officer with baseball bats.
The officer retreated to his car and was in the process of leaving when Mailman allegedly threw a petrol container at the vehicle, but it landed short, Mr Baddock said.
The Armed Offenders Squad was called in and after a period of negotiation, Mailman came out to the officers.
"He resisted being arrested, but was arrested by the AOS." Mailman appeared in court today and was remanded on bail until January 29.
