KEY POINTS:
A man will face criminal charges over the death of a young man fatally shot while hunting after being mistaken for a deer, it was confirmed today.
Aron Colin Timms, 18, from Taradale, Napier, died instantly from a single gunshot to the chest while hunting deer with Garth Porter, his girlfriend's father, on March 15.
Mr Porter and Mr Timms were on a hunting trip with one other man when the accident occurred in the Tarawera region, northwest of Napier.
After the shooting, a distraught Mr Porter drove 12km to the nearest house to raise the alarm.
His daughter Nicole and Aron had known each other for three years.
Police said today a 53-year-old man had been arrested and bailed to appear in Napier District Court on Wednesday, facing a charge of careless use of a firearm causing death.
