A man alleged to have used a screwdriver to rob a central Auckland bank on Wednesday was caught by police a short distance away.
The robbery happened at the National Bank branch in Queen St just before 2pm, when a lone male presented a screwdriver at staff.
Police said the offender made off with a significant amount of cash.
However, shortly afterwards, a person fitting the description of the robber was apprehended not far from the bank, and a screwdriver and an amount of cash were located.
No one was hurt in the incident and detectives were speaking to the man.
