A man convicted of murdering his girlfriend's father has been sentenced to at least 14 years in jail.
John Tokoroa Bunt was sentenced in the High Court at Hamilton today after he admitted in April to killing Wiremu Tamanui Awa in Huntly last April.
The body of Mr Awa, a father of seven, was found on a vacant section near railway tracks on the outskirts of the town on April 19 last year.
On the first day of his trial, Bunt, 22, pleaded guilty to murdering the man whose daughter he had a child with.
Justice Asher sentenced Bunt to to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 14 years for what he called a "brutal and callous" killing.
