A man who drowned at Maori Bay on Friday was a 21-year-old Indian national.
Police have named the man as Akhil Tangri. He had only been in New Zealand for a number of months, police said in a statement.
St John Ambulance crews and police rushed to Maori Bay west of Auckland shortly after 3.30pm on Friday after receiving reports a man was in trouble.
Officers spoke to witnesses and provided support to the man's friends.
Police said the death has been referred to the coroner.
