A King Country man who allegedly clubbed a dog to death with a golf club has been remanded in custody, police say.
Mathew George, 44, from Te Kuiti, 80km north west of Taumarunui, appeared in Hamilton District Court today.
He was charged with animal cruelty, possession of offensive weapons and threatening behaviour.
Police were called to a Te Kuiti house last night and found the dead dog.
Senior Sergeant Rob Van Kalken said they found George standing in the doorway of the house armed with an array of weapons, including an axe, spade and golf club.
He eventually surrendered to police, Mr Van Kalken said.
George did not enter a plea today and was due to reappear in court on Thursday.
