KEY POINTS:
A man had an amazing escape from injury when his car was struck twice by a train on a level crossing in Featherston this afternoon.
Police said that the 53-year-old local man had failed to see the flashing red lights and bells as he approached the crossing near the intersection of Fox and Johnston Streets.
"He braked but unfortunately the train was too close, and clipped him at the front and then clipped him at the back and flicked him off the track," Sergeant Kevin Basher said.
He said the driver, the sole occupant, stepped out of the car unscathed although he was taken by hospital as a precautionary measure.
The car was a write-off.
The passenger train travelling to Masterton was undamaged and able to continue its journey.
