KEY POINTS:
A man is to have brain surgery today after being beaten in an Auckland karaoke bar early this morning.
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cramer, of Auckland police, said the man suffered head injuries in the 3.30am attack at the Victoria Park Lounge, close to the city centre.
The injuries were serious but not believed to be life-threatening.
It appeared "weapons of opportunity" from around the bar had been used in the attack, he said.
"It was a fairly vicious attack, with a couple of items of furniture from the premises used," he told NZPA.
Six men were in police custody this morning. They and the victim were all Asians.
Mr Cramer said police were still investigating what caused the attack.
