A Dunedin man who sparked a police man hunt after he fired a shotgun during an argument with his partner while in Central Otago has turned himself in.
The 50-year-old man and his partner were staying at a holiday home with a group of people in the settlement of Waipiata, 10km southeast of Ranfurly, when he produced a shotgun and fired into the ground about 9.45pm yesterday after arguing with his partner, police said.
The man then fled the scene on foot sparking a police man hunt.
No-one was injured but the incident left the group shocked and upset and the man's partner was taken to a place of safety and the group was receiving help from victim support.
The man handed himself in at the central Dunedin police station at about 10am today, Senior Sergeant Chris McLellan told NZPA.
He had been charged with assaulting a person with a firearm and was remanded in police custody to appear in Dunedin District Court on April 27.
Mr McLellan said the man had been co-operative with police and voluntarily turned himself in.
Police are still considering further charges.
Police earlier said it was believed the man did not have access to a weapon or vehicle and he was not considered a threat to the public.
