Invercargill police are hunting a man after an attempt to lure a young girl into a car.
An Asian man parked his four-wheel-drive vehicle beside the 10-year-old girl as she waited for her mother on the corner of a central city street on Monday, The Southland Times reported.
The man yelled at her to get into his car but she ignored him and walked away, Invercargill Senior Sergeant Maggie Windle said.
A female passer-by told the man to go away. The young girl was unharmed by the incident.
Police described the would-be abductor as aged in his 20s with short black hair. He was wearing a green polar fleece hoodie and driving a silver-coloured 4WD, similar to an Isuzu Wizard, with a spare tyre on the back door.
