A man was trapped in a wreck for over an hour after a crash between a campervan and a car.
Three people were seriously injured in the crash on the Athol Five Rivers Highway, between Queenstown and Invercargill, with ambulances and three rescue helicopters responding.
One male patient was flown to Klew Hospital in Invercargill with serious injuries after being trapped for more than an hour.
Fire fighters eventually freed him. One of the vehicles was on fire and another female patient was flown to Dunedin Hospital with injuries including burns.
In all, seven people were injured in the crash, three seriously.
