KEY POINTS:
A 57-year-old man who was refused entry to a Wellington bar because he was "too old" has complained to the Human Rights Commission.
Artist Norman Levido went to the student hangout The Big Kumara Bar on February 27 for a quiet beer but was turned away.
He was halfway up the stairs to the bar when a bouncer called out: "There are young people up there, you go home," he told The Dominion Post.
Mr Levido said other people were around and he felt embarrassed and had complained to the Human Rights Commission.
At first he only wanted an apology, but after being refused entry to The Establishment Bar - another bar owned by Andrew Gibson's hospitality group - on Monday night, he wanted an apology and compensation.
Jamie Wilson, a spokesman from the group, told the newspaper it had no comment to make because it was a matter between it and the commission.
Commission spokesman Gilbert Wong said it would need to talk to both parties to see if there was any unlawful discrimination.
He said bars could not exclude people on the basis of age, gender, sexual orientation, political or religious beliefs.
