A man survived being hit by a freight train in Blenheim early this morning.
The 21-year-old pedestrian was hit by a northbound train at about 5.45am, police said.
He suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Wellington Hospital.
A KiwiRail spokeswoman said the train was carrying freight from Christchurch to Picton when it hit the man a short distance from Blenheim Station.
The train driver had been stood down and would be offered counselling.
