A man who was stung in the chest by a stingray barb in Marlborough this afternoon has been airlifted to hospital.
The man in his 50s was diving for crayfish in 4m of water at Marfells Beach, near Seddon, when he was suddenly struck in the lower chest area by a stingray barb about 1pm.
He was pulled from the water by friends, who then contacted emergency services.
A Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter intensive care paramedic treated the man at the beach for his injuries.
He was then flown to Wellington Hospital, in a stable condition, for further assessment.
