A man was struck with a car before being attacked with a hammer in Taupo yesterday.
Police say many people witnessed the 2.20pm incident.
"The public are horrified by this sort of violence and we had a queue of people who wanted to tell the police what they saw," Detective Sergeant Dave Beattie, of Taupo police, said in a statement.
"Police are seeking no further witnesses to the incident."
A 26-year-old Taupo man was arrested and is being held in custody. He is to appear in Taupo District Court today facing charges including wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and assault with a weapon.
