A man is in a serious but stable condition after suffering a fractured skull in a fight with another man in Auckland on Sunday night.
The 55-year-old man was in the critical care unit in Auckland Hospital after the incident on Jervois Rd, Herne Bay, around 6.30pm on Sunday.
A 22-year-old unemployed man from Grey Lynn had been arrested and charged with assault and has appeared in Auckland District Court.
He was granted interim name suppression after his lawyer, Alex Steedman, argued that the accused's family were not all aware of what had happened.
The man was bailed and is due back in court on September 7.
Detective Senior Sergeant Gerry Whitley, of Auckland CIB, told NZPA the inquiry was going well, and police had spoken to the majority of witnesses.
Mr Whitley thanked the public and residents of Jervois Rd for assisting the injured man and for providing valuable information that led to the arrest.
