Man still critical a day after crash near Waihi

A man is still fighting for his life a day after he sustained critical injuries in a crash between a car and a truck near Waihi. ​

He had to be cut from the wreckage of one of the vehicles and was airlifted to Waikato Hospital after the crash about 1.50pm yesterday.

The man remained in a critical condition tonight, a Waikato DHB spokeswoman said.

The Serious Crash Unit and Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit were investigating the crash yesterday, police said.

The Waikato Hospital emergency department was yesterday inundated with trauma patients after at least four serious crashes in the Waikato region and one in Bay of Plenty, Waikato DHB spokeswoman said.

Two other patients were flown to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition following separate crashes in Reporoa and Turangi.

Another two people, one with serious injuries and the other in a moderate condition, were injured in a crash near Karapiro and taken to Waikato Hospital via ambulance.
