KEY POINTS:
A 21-year-old man was shot in the head during a rabbit shooting expedition near Putaruru yesterday, police said.
Detective Sergeant Kevan Verry, of Tokoroa police, said today the man was shot about 11pm at a rural address at Waotu, 10km south-west of Putaruru.
"The victim is a working exchange student from the United Kingdom and is in critical condition at the Waikato Hospital intensive care unit."
The victim's family in the UK had been informed, Mr Verry said.
Tokoroa CIB were investigating the incident and a forensic examination of two locations would be conducted tomorrow.
Mr Verry said a number of witnesses had been spoken to and inquiries were continuing.
