KEY POINTS:
A man was shot after a fight over a woman led to violent confrontations between a number of men in Woodville, near Palmerston North, police said today.
The 31-year-old man is undergoing surgery in Palmerston North Hospital after he was shot in the leg during the dispute at 10pm yesterday.
Senior Sergeant Greg Hudson said no arrests had been made and police hadn't confirmed how many people were involved in two separate fights.
He said they were in the process of interviewing a number of men, who were all Woodville locals.
Some of the people hurt in the fights had refused medical treatment and "some of the offenders and some of the victims are one and the same", he added.
A gun, tomahawk, and a variety of "garden" tools were used in the dispute over a domestic relationship.
"Basically, somebody's taken exception to somebody else in respect of their partner," Mr Hudson said.
In the first incident, a group of people went to a house on Atkinson Street at 9.30pm where there was a confrontation and an assault, he said.
"That group has then returned to an address in Ormond Street a short time later, and another group has arrived and another confrontation has taken place involving weapons."
Mr Hudson said police were still trying to confirm the details of the shooting.
The victim had resided at Atkinson Street, where the first confrontation took place.
Police were confident a number of individuals would be charged over the fights.
"Alcohol was involved and a lot of the group were very uncooperative towards police," Mr Hudson said.
