An Otago man who tried to stash an air pistol in his pants is nursing a welt on his leg after he apparently shot himself.
The man was reportedly seen removing the pistol from the waistband of his trousers as he walked through Frankton, near Queenstown, around 11.55am today.
At around the same time ambulance staff received a call from a man who said he had shot himself in the leg with an air pistol.
Police and ambulance staff found the man walking down Frankton Rd towards Queenstown.
However, no firearm was found and police asked locals to be aware that it may have been hidden in the area.
