A man is seriously ill in Middlemore Hospital after he was hit by a car in the south Auckland suburb of Flat Bush today.
Police said the man was knocked over on Te Irirangi Drive shortly after 7am and helped by several cyclists until an ambulance arrived.
The cyclists also directed traffic around the injured man until police arrived.
"The pedestrian was taken to Middlemore Hospital. His injuries were described as serious," a police spokesman said.
The Serious Crash Unit examined the scene and closed the southbound lane of Te Irirangi Dr.
