A man was seriously injured in a quad bike accident in Northland earlier today.
It is understood the 31-year-old - who was celebrating his birthday - went off the top of a steep dune on his bike and crashed near the bottom near about 2km south of Pouto Lighthouse.
Emergency services were called to the scene about 10.30am and he was taken to Whangarei Hospital by the Northland Electricity Rescue Helicopter.
Pilot Russell Procter said the man had suffered injuries to his leg, abdomen and was concussed.
It took the helicopter about 15 minutes to get the man to hospital.
