Man seriously injured during assault in Wellington

A man suffered serious injuries after he was assaulted in Wellington last night.

The 39-year-old was discovered on Rintoul Street in Newtown by a member of the public about 9.30pm, Detective Sergeant Mark Scott said.

The man has facial injuries and is being treated at Wellington Hospital's intensive care unit.

"We don't know was what used to inflict injuries to his face," Mr Scott said.

Police were in the area conducting inquiries today.

It was not known if the attacker was known to the man, Mr Scott said.
