An elderly man is in a critical condition after falling four metres into an empty swimming pool on the Banks Peninsula near Christchurch.
The 75-year-old was trimming bushes around the pool when he fell into it, suffering serious head injuries. He was found by his wife who alerted emergency services.
The incident, at Te Oka Bay, was attended by the Little River Fire Service, and a road-based St John ambulance.
The man was flown to Christchurch Hospital by the Canterbury-based Westpac Rescue Helicopter with life-threatening injuries.
