KEY POINTS:
A man in his 40s was taken to Auckland Hospital after he was seriously assaulted in a house in the Auckland suburb of Mt Albert about 5.40pm last night.
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cramer said today police had spoken to several people overnight but would not say if an arrest was imminent. The victim was known to the attackers.
He said the man's condition was critical when he was admitted to hospital and put on a life support system but he improved overnight.
"His injuries are now not thought to be life threatening," Mr Cramer said.
"We have spoken to a couple of people overnight and the key aspect to the inquiry will be a scene examination.
"He is known to the people we have spoken to - we have spoken to half a dozen people now, and those people have all been very cooperative."
Mr Cramer said police were confident of a resolution.
