KEY POINTS:
A couple are being sought after a vicious attack on a New Plymouth man with a wheel brace early on Sunday.
Police have not yet been able to speak to the 19-year-old victim who is in intensive care in Taranaki Base Hospital.
He was walking alone along Devon St East towards Fitzroy, when he was attacked by a man and woman about 12.10am on Sunday.
Constable Rhys Connell, of New Plymouth police, said today the man was bashed about the head with the wheel brace and then crashed through a shop window.
"We are unsure if he has fallen through it or was pushed through it."
Members of the public who witnessed the assault called police.
"The attack was out of the ordinary and we do not know what had provoked it," Mr Connell said
Mr Connell said the woman was described as a 17-year-old Caucasian with short blonde hair, but police do not have a description of the male.
The pair left the scene in a white sedan.
The victim was last night reported to be stable.
