A man was seriously injured in a crash on Waiheke Island just before midnight.
The Fire Service was alerted at 11.56pm that a car had gone down a bank on Wilma Rd, in Surfdale, Northern Fire Communications' shift manager Jaron Phillips said.
The injured man was trapped after his car went down a bank on Wilma Rd.
Firefighters had to use cutting equipment to free him.
A St John Ambulance spokesman said this morning the man suffered serious injuries and was flown by rescue helicopter to Auckland City Hospital.
