A man suffered extensive injuries when he was run over during a clash between rival youth gangs in Ruatoki, eastern Bay of Plenty, last night.
Today Whakatane police spokesman Floyd Pratt said the 36-year-old victim was in a stable condition.
Mr Pratt said police were called about 11.50pm to disorder in Ruatoki, 23km south of Whakatane, where there were initial reports of shots being fired and people injured.
Three general duties officers and the Rotorua and Tauranga armed offenders squads, each comprising nine members, were deployed to the area.
"It was discovered that two rival youth gangs had a fight and during the incident a vehicle collision occurred and a 36-year-old male was run over," Mr Pratt said.
"There was no evidence a firearm was used."
Mr Pratt said the injured man suffered extensive injuries. Police had identified the driver of the car and inquiries were continuing.
