A man has been rescued from Porirua Harbour after he swam away from caregivers.
The 22-year-old entered the water at the inner Porirua Harbour, on the Paremata side, around 4.30pm, police said.
He was swimming away from caregivers, and after police were called he spent an hour swimming and wading over sandbanks away from support, police said.
A constable in a kayak, the Wellington Westpac Rescue Helicopter and the Mana Coastguard in a rib vessel were sent out on the water to find the man and bring him to safety. Police officers were also stationed on the banks around the harbour.
The man was eventually plucked out of the water by Coastguard and taken back to the Coastguard base, police said.
