A man had to be rescued from a steep gorge after slipping during a guided canyoning trip and injuring his leg.
The 38-year-old fell on rocks in Torrent River, near Torrent Bay in the Abel Tasman National Park.
The group guides activated an emergency locator beacon and then stabilised the man until the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter arrived.
The steep terrain and dense forest meant the helicopter was unable to land so the on-board intensive care paramedic was winched down to the scene where he assessed and treated the injured man.
The medic and patient were then winched back on board for transport to Nelson Hospital Emergency Department.
