Man rescued after crash in Carterton

Firefighters were scrambled to a three-car collision outside The Glade subdivision on High St South in Carterton yesterday.

A man had to be rescued from a car backseat after a nose-to-tail crash in Carterton yesterday.

Three cars were involved in a collision outside The Glade subdivision on High St South about 10.45am, with one passenger being taken to hospital with suspected whiplash.

Crews from the Carterton and Greytown fire brigades, Wellington Free Ambulance and police attended the crash.

Greytown Chief Fire Officer Harry Howard said the call-out was upgraded to a rescue, after Carterton firefighters received reports a person was trapped in one of the cars.

The back doors of the car were jammed, and the backseat passenger, a man in his twenties, was complaining of a sore neck, said Carterton Deputy Fire Chief Bryan Styles.

"We popped open the door, so the paramedics were able to move him

"He had a bit of whiplash by the looks of things."

The man was taken to Wairarapa Hospital for a check up.

Nobody else was injured.

Masterton police sergeant Simon Irving said the crash was caused by a fourth car braking suddenly, after the driver believed he saw a black dog on the road.

The three cars behind that vehicle then collided, nose-to-tail with one another, causing significant damage to two of the cars, and minor damage to the other.

The car which braked suddenly was not hit and was undamaged.
